The purpose of the Porterville Quilters Club is to create, stimulate, maintain, and record an interest in all matters pertaining to the making, collecting, and preserving of quilts and to establish and promote educational and philanthropic endeavors through quilts.

History of Porterville Quilters and the Logo

Porterville Quilters Club was the vision of a woman by the nane of Nadine Turner. Nadine had been teaching quilting through the Parks and Leisure Department of Porterville. She really enjoyed what she did as a quilter and wanted to share this with others who wanted to learn and maintain an interest in this field.

In order to find like-minded persons, she wrote a letter to the editor of the Porterville Recorder encouraging people to contact her. Several people contacted her and they set up a meeting at the Community Center. This charter meeting date for the club was October 3, 1983.

Nadine Turner passed away in 1999. She left a legacy of women who are ever grateful for her vision of creating an atmosphere for women who want to continue the art of quil- making and public service. Currently there is one charter member in our club; Juanita Loftis.

The logo for Porterville Quilters is the iris flower. Mr. Shortman (a former Porterville business owner) propagated a beautiful purple iris and the City of Porterville adopted it as the city flower. The club decided the iris would be a good logo as well. There are many items with this logo on them such as aprons, shirt, and various pins. The logo was incorporated into a quilt that is on display at the Quilt Museum in San Jose, California. Our member, Lois Hummel, made the quilt block that is in that quilt.
